Taking into consideration the hits and misses of the iPhone 7, it’s pretty much an interesting time for one to be an Android acolyte. The decision by apple to remove the headphone jack from iPhone has without a doubt infuriated a good number of people and by so doing, a substantial number of them have considered the alternate operating system. Samsung on the other side has not seemed to fully capitalise with its note 7 having burst into flames on various occasions. That said, in as much as various Android phones have demerits (most notably fragmentation), the upside when it comes to Android operated smartphones is that you are not limited to one phone as there are thousands of mobile phones that are operated by the little green robot.
The iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy created a buzz in the mobile phone industry no doubt. There are those of us who were impressed by various improvements and additions while some of us were disappointed as there was nothing substantial to make them ditch their earlier phones. Well, as we head into the festive season, let’s take a look at a number of upcoming Android phones worth waiting for.
Huawei Mate 9
The rumour mill is abuzz with information that the Chinese company that manufacturers Huawei phones is keen on taking the fight to the doorstep of Apple and Samsung with its anticipated flagship phone of Huawei Mate 9. According to rumours doing rounds, Huawei Mate 9 is expected to have 4GB to 6GB of RAM, a Kirin 960 processor, 64GB to 256GB storage, an iris scanner, 20-megapixel camera, 6-inch screen not to mention the fact that the phone is expected to run on stock Android 7. OnePlus 4 is expected to be the successor of OnePlus 3. And while OnePlus 3 was heavily lauded for its performance for a budget phone, OnePlus 4 will without a doubt come with major improvements that won’t disappoint. This amazing smartphone is expected to sport a 23-megapixel camera, 256GB storage, Snapdragon 830 processor, NFC and USB-C support, 8GB RAM, runs on Android 7 Nougat with not to mention an OLED screen. All these features for a phone that is expected to cost less than £330 and you will understand why Android enthusiasts simply can’t wait for this phone to be unveiled.
Lenovo Phab 2 Pro
A solid Phablet in its own right and supporting the Tango functionality, Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is expected to be unveiled this fall. It will come with a 6.4-inch QHD screen, 4050 mAh battery, 4GB RAM, snapdragon 652 processor that is effectively optimised for Tango, 8.9mm aluminium body, 64GB storage, and a 16-megapixel camera. Nokia’s Android phone (C1 anyone?)
No doubt, Nokia was ahead of the pack some years back and used to be a fantastic manufacturer of phones. With its success back then, it is not difficult to see why Microsoft couldn’t resist the urge to buy them. The undeniable thing is that windows Phones as a platform lagged behind main players IOS and Android all these years. While part of the deal was that Nokia couldn’t manufacture mobile phones, Nokia recently unshackled itself from Microsoft and all indications are that it is keen on winning back its loyal fans with the unveiling of an Android phone (expected to be the C1). Even though the details on the expected Nokia smartphone are scarce, the leaked information regarding the upcoming Nokia smartphone indicates that it will have a 5” 1080p screen, Android 6 Marshmallow rather than the latest Android 7 Nougat, and an Intel atom chipset. We hope to get more information on the upcoming C1 Nokia smartphone soon!
